Zuberec, a submontane village /762 metresabove sea level / was founded in 1588 on authority of Walachian right. It is a part of the region Tvrdošín and has more than 1850 inhabitants. Zuberec noted down a remarkable development in last 50 years and became a well – known centre of tourism. It is an incoming gate of the West Tatras and lies down at the borderland of the Chočské and Skorušinské hills. When most of the footpaths are closed in the Tatras / from 1st November to 15th June /, hikes in the Chočské and Skorušinské hills are available for tourists.

The Roháče mountains lure to alpine hikes in summer and they are an attracting centre of winter sports in winter. Ski centres Zverovka – Spálená, Zuberec – Janovky and Milotín offer excellent services with a possibility of night skiing. There are ski services, rental services, ski and snowboard schools, snack – bars with a refreshment. Lovers of cross – country skiing please more than30 kilometres of treating tracks in beautiful countryside. There are excellent conditions for skialpinists in Zuberec and the Roháče mountains.

There are regularly organized WSA European Championship of dogsleds in Februa­ry in Zuberec. An open air museum of Orava village in Brestová unthinkable belongs to Zuberec. It is counted among the nicest museums of folk architecture in Europe. It offers attractive programmes and activities for children and adults all the year round. The best – known are the Podroháčske folk festival, which are held at the first weekend of August. There are kilometres of cycling tracks around Zuberec.
